Advancing Transportation Safety
No matter your journey or travel method, Colorado is committed to providing you a safe and efficient transportation network so you arrive at your destination safely. The Advancing Transportation Safety (ATS) effort establishes a collaborative and shared vision and mission for transportation safety in Colorado.
Vision
The future of Colorado is zero deaths and serious injuries so all people using any transportation mode arrive at their destination safely.
Mission
To build a unified approach to transportation safety through the integrated implementation of education, engineering, enforcement, emergency response, equity and evaluation to reduce fatalities and serious injuries for all users on Colorado roadways. Implementation will be driven by data, best practices and research.
Program Goals
Establish a culture of safety in Colorado.
Cultivate and strengthen partnerships.
Increase coordination and information sharing across sectors and geographies.
Implement effective and data-proven safety countermeasures.
Program Organization
In 2015, Colorado announced its Moving Colorado Towards Zero Death initiative to reduce deaths on Colorado roadways. The ATS initiative is the natural continuation of this effort and expands upon the goals outlined. This undertaking establishes a clear structure for stakeholder engagement and coordination to address safety issues holistically. The initiative is composed of an Executive Committee, Steering Committee and Emphasis Area Working Groups.
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee is comprised of leadership from each of the participating state agencies. The Executive Committee is responsible for evaluating program outcomes on an annual basis, providing high-level, strategic direction and cultivating a safety culture. The Executive Committee will meet on a semi-annual basis, or when determined by the Chair.
Steering Committee
The Steering Committee includes directors and managers from state agencies and partner organizations. The Steering Committee is responsible for program development, identifying and evaluating strategic priorities and advocating for broader agency support. The Committee will meet quarterly or as needed.
Emphasis Areas
The Emphasis Areas came out of the 2020 - 2023 Strategic Transportation Safety Plan and the Safe Systems Approach. The Working Groups meet regularly and are responsible for establishing key actions, coordinating efforts and supporting implementation. Working groups are open to individuals working within the safety space.
Planning & Implementation Team
The ATS initiative is managed by the Colorado Department of Transportation. The Safety Performance and Engineering Unit in the Headquarters Traffic Safety and Engineering Services Branch oversees all administrative planning and implementation efforts for the ATS.
